Would you like to be be involved in the joint SOG/SWT SOS Swifts project as a volunteer Swifts Advisor?
Swift is currently on the Amber list of ‘Birds of Conservation Concern’. However, a paper published in the September issue of British Birds uses IUCN Red Data Book criteria to analyse recent trends in Swift numbers and cites Swift as ‘Endangered’ as a breeding bird in Great Britain. So the need to do what we can to help them has become even more urgent.
As part of our on-going work to raise awareness of Swifts and encourage local action, SOS Swifts is hoping to recruit additional volunteer Advisors to help locate Swift breeding sites and colonies across Suffolk and provide advice to individuals and institutions on how they can help to reverse the declines.
A training and information session is being held next month:
On: Saturday 11 November, 1000 – 1300
At: Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Brooke House, Ashbocking, IP6 9JY
The training will be led by Edward Jackson, SOG Secretary and SOS Swifts lead volunteer. We’ll be looking at the ecology and natural history of this fascinating bird; the nature and reasons for its decline across most of the UK and what can be done here in Suffolk to help them. This will include how to record the presence of Swifts using our dedicated online recording forms and lots of information on how to advise on how to maintain existing nest sites and create new ones.
In return for this free training session, we will ask you to consider signing up as a volunteer Swifts Advisor. This will involve following up enquiries from the general public (forwarded to you by SWT staff) and as a result making site visits to give first hand advice, as well as telephone calls and emails as appropriate. If you don’t already volunteer with SWT, you will also be asked to fill out their Volunteer Form.
Up to 20 training places are available in total. If you would like to book a place, or have any questions about what being an Advisor would involve, please contact Tracey Housley at SWT:
or leave a message for her at SWT Reception on 01473 890089.
Further details will be sent out via email the week before to those who have booked a place.
